Message in a Shell Washes Ashore

Today: a tiny post about a tiny–but very intriguing–message. A message in a shell.

At the end of July this year, Amy Mayes was walking Cocoa Beach with her husband and kids when they stumbled upon a shell that appeared to have writing on its inner surface, according to WKMG News 6 in Orlando.

When Ashley Guerra of J2LR General Contractors in Indianapolis wrote to tell me of her company’s 87 year old message in a bottle discovery, I was dumbfounded. You see–they didn’t find their message in a bottle on a beach. Instead, their crew found it while digging up a construction site at 10th and Emerson in Indy.

The tiny bottle contained a single piece of paper inscribed on both sides. The front side is hard to read. It appears to simply be a “work ticket”. It shows the business brand and logo, but the handwriting is faded beyond readability:

NASA estimates there are about 372,000 miles of coastline in the world. That provides a LOT of space for bizarre things to wash up. 2016 did not disappoint when it came to bizarre stuff washing ashore. Here’s a list of some of the strangest beach finds of 2016. Continue reading →

I’ve often marveled at the variety of things that end up in bottles on the beach. I mean, the variety among the messages folks write is amazing in itself. But then, beyond that, there’s a lot of other…stuff…that people put into bottles, often for reasons unknown.

In truth, every bottle on the beach sends a message, doesn’t it? Sometimes, the message seems to be: “I was sent here by someone who doesn’t care about destroying fragile ecosystems!” Sometimes, the message is more like: “Oops! I was using this bottle when the wind kicked up and blew it into the sea.” Many bottles (and other objects) are spilled from ships during storms, or find their way into the ocean after having been dumped in a river. In any case, lying there in piles of thousands on the beach, the collective message is clear: this is not good.

Aside from messages, I have found many things in bottles.  Once, I found 4 used and rolled up tubes of super glue rattling around in an empty plastic bottle.  One day I found a receipt from hardware store in Puerto Rico in a bottle.  And one of my favorites was a toothbrush—brand new—that fit perfectly inside a plastic sports drink bottle.  Was this an improvised carrying case?  Or…did I miss something?  Was there scrimshaw on the toothbrush?!

Among the fascinating and inscrutable “messages” I’ve found is this dollar bill:
