How a Business Card in a Bottle Led Me to New York City

After meeting Ed and Carol Meyers in Washington, D.C., I was back on the train, heading to New York City to meet Richard Kaplan. I was determined to get my money’s worth from my Amtrak Rail Pass! And, I needed to meet the man on the other end of this business card in a bottle I found two years earlier.

One day in May of 2007, I decided to go on a big hike over some rocky bluffs along the ocean, and I ended up finding this message in a bottle:

My original goal was to get from one beach to another, but I wanted to see what the coastline was like between the two beaches. Here’s a map of my hike, and what I discovered:

Valentine’s Day Message in a Bottle Leads to Year Long Quest for Authors

Here’s the beautiful, romantic message in a bottle I found in 2007. This greeting of peace and love was sent by Ed and Carol Meyers on their first wedding anniversary, which was Valentine’s Day, 1999. You may recall that the brown smudges on the message are the remains of their wedding cake – they had saved a piece of it for their first anniversary, and included some in their Valentine’s Day message in a bottle!

I googled the names I found on the message, Ed and Carol Meyers, and found nothing.  I searched the Fredericksburg white pages; nothing. I even emailed the resort whose stationary they used for the message, but never heard back. Continue reading →
