A Surprising Find on a Nova Scotia Beach

11-year-old Dallas Goreham of Woods Harbour, Nova Scotia was at the beach with his father and grandmother, looking for sea glass, when he found something quite different–a plastic bottle containing letter nearly twice as old as himself. As with any good message-in-a-bottle story, there was a bit of mystery in the bottle, too. The 18 year old message in a bottle was signed by Rita who included a non-functional email address. But who was Rita? And where was she?

2017 Message in a Bottle Answered by Anonymous Irish Beachcomber

I love this story! It’s so mysterious! Check it out: An American girl named Catherine went to the beach on January 2nd, 2017, with her dad and her sister. There, she sent a message in a bottle in celebration of the new year and wishing the finder happiness, according to the Donegal Daily. Then, presumably, they all hopped in the car and drove home, and that was it. Flash forward to March 2018, when they received a lovely but mysterious letter in the mail from the bottle’s anonymous finder in County Donegal. That’s right: Anonymous! Usually it’s the SENDER who is hard to find–but in this case, the person who FOUND the message in a bottle remains a mystery! Catherine’s 2017 message in a bottle thus managed the strange feat of being found by someone who she cannot find. Continue reading →

1985 Message in a Bottle Found

*This 1985 message in a bottle was found back in 2008, but I just found out about it, and I think it’s super cool!*

When Donald Wylie was just 11 years old, he cast a message in a bottle into the sea hoping for a penpal, according to the University of St. Andrews. Well, it took longer than he hoped, but he also got more than he asked for. 23 years later, he gained real-life friends instead of a penpal. Wylie launched his 1985 message in a bottle in the Orkneys, and it washed ashore in 2008 at St. Andrews, northeast of Edinburgh. A Scottish message in a bottle, through and through! It’s not the oldest Scottish message in a bottle, but at 23 years, it’s downright impressive. Continue reading →

Message in a Bottle Found

I recently heard from Alison, a woman who found a message in a bottle and immediately felt the same surprise and awe at that experience that keeps me addicted 🙂 Message in a bottle magic is powerful stuff!

“I have been an avid beachcomber all my life with a recent passion for sea glass hunting,” she said.

“I was walking alone at Nauset Beach in March [2017], it was in the mid-30s, overcast, windy and raw. Sometimes my sea glass hunts turn into beach cleanup, but when I went to pick up what I thought was a piece of trash, I was astounded to see a message in the bottle! I started shaking and I think my heart skipped a couple beats!”

I don’t know much about the world, but a lot of what I know has come from messages in bottles. People launch them for all kinds of reasons, and each provides a window into another life–another world, really.

Some Friends I’ve Yet to Meet, Some I Know Already.

I always wanted to find a message in a bottle when I was young. This was before the Nicholas Sparks book, and before I had ever heard Sting’s song. I loved reading, and I loved writing, and man, I really wanted a penpal. I loved the ocean, too, so a message in a bottle seemed like the perfect fit. Continue reading →
