German Man Finds his Grandfather’s Message in a Bottle

Peter Brandt, a roofer in Goslar, Germany, was conducting maintenance on the town’s cathedral when he made an incredible discovery: An 88 year old message in a bottle. But this was not just any message from a distant stranger. This was Peter Brandt’s own grandfather’s message in a bottle. Willi Brandt signed the message on March 26th, 1930, and it remained hidden in the cathedral’s roof for 88 years, according to The Local Germany.

An Extreme Walker and a Dog Find a 21 Year Old Message in a Bottle…

That may sound like the setup for a punchline, but in fact, it is the heart of an amazing true story. A 21 year old message in a bottle was found in Scotland by a man walking the entire coastline of the UK to raise money for SSAFA, the UK’s Armed Forces charity–or rather, it was found by the dog he was walking with! Former paratrooper Chris Lewis told Belfast Live “I was on a Scottish leg of the charity walk with my pal Kenny and his dogs and Toby, one of the dogs, found the bottle at Portlogan. When we saw it had a message inside it was amazing.” Incredibly, Toby is one of many dogs who have found messages in bottles!

Canadian Sisters’ Message in a Bottle Travels from Nova Scotia to Scotland

Again and again, messages in bottles forge lovely connections between Canadians and Scots. One Scottish woman has even found two messages in bottles from the same Canadian sender! On Canada Day 2017 (which was Saturday, July 1st), Annalea Vardy, age 6, and her sister Isabel, 3, were aboard their grandparents’ sailboat, celebrating Canada’s 150th year of independence. That’s their sesquicentennial anniversary, for anyone who likes long words 🙂 Together with their grandparents, David and Donna, the girls sent a message in a bottle in honor of Canada’s independence. The sisters’ message in a bottle drifted away and the family continued their sailing adventure.

Charleston Sailor’s Message in a Bottle to King Neptune Found

Know what’s weird? Sometimes it takes more time to find the sender of a message in a bottle than the bottle spent at sea! Case in point: This sailor’s message in a bottle I found way back in 2012. I could tell right away that it wasn’t very old. The note was wrapped in plastic bags inside a plastic bottle and plastic doesn’t survive intact long at sea. Surely, it would be easy to read and solve, right?! Well, one thing I love about messages in bottles is that they capture so well the chaos of life. This message in a bottle would remind me that the only constant in human life is change. We move, change phone numbers, delete old email accounts, and so on. And that makes solving bottled messages a bit tricky.
