Uplifting Message in a Bottle’s Author Has Been Found

When Laura Barnard of New South Wales, Australia, found a message in a bottle at Entrance Beach in early November, she posted about it on Facebook in hopes of finding the uplifting message in a bottle’s author — a 5-year-old boy named Flynn. Within a day, her post had been shared more than 600 times. That number quickly grew to over a thousand shares. Australia’s 7 News did a story about Laura’s find (though it should be noted that the video in that story is, confusingly, about a totally different message in a bottle), and I joined in the hunt with my previous post. Well, as if to prove the point that messages in bottles bring people together, thousands of strangers helped to spread the word about Laura’s find–and now, Flynn has been found!

Uplifting Message in a Bottle Found in Australia

If you or someone you love has ever battled cancer, you know well the power of uplifting moments happening in the midst of that struggle. Laura Barnard of Australia is in the midst of treatment to fight her breast cancer, and had just finished a few important stages of that when she stumbled upon a lovely, uplifting message in a bottle at Entrance Beach in New South Wales, Australia. She tells me she was “Just walking the dog, relaxing after another long week of radiation” when she found the uplifting message in a bottle. And then, the search for Flynn began! Laura hopes that anyone reading this will help spread the word to find him.

How to Make a Message in a Bottle (The Wrong Way)

I am often asked how to make a message in a bottle, and I never know quite what to say. See, I find them–I don’t make them. You might as well ask me how to make the bottle itself. (Ah, you melt some sand, see, and poke a metal straw into it and blow…).

I’m not sure I can tell you how to make a message in a bottle, but I can definitely tell you how not to. That’s because I have found a TON of failed messages in bottles over the years. This is the first in a series of posts that will respond to the question “How do I make a message in a bottle?” by showing you what not to do.

(Have YOU made a message in a bottle? What are your tips and tricks? Share your ideas by commenting below!)

This first message in a bottle falls into a category I have coined: “mess in a bottle”. Just check out the carnage wrought upon this poor letter by the author and executioner:

How NOT to Make a Message in a Bottle – shaved wine cork stuck into the neck of a beer bottle.

Dora Taylor – Your Message in a Bottle Has Been Found in Belton Lake!

Dora Taylor’s Message in a Bottle Found in Belton Lake

A lovely and mysterious message in a bottle has been found in Texas’s Belton Lake! It is lovely because it was written with the imagination and heart of a 12 year old girl–and mysterious because the letter is not dated, and both the bottle and letter look fairly old (I’m guessing 10 – 25 years) and no one seems to know where the author is today. All we know is that when she sent her message in Belton Lake, Dora Taylor lived in Temple, Texas. Temple is a bit south of Waco and Dallas / Ft. Worth. Priscilla Caldwell first shared the story on her Facebook page, explaining “My Aunt Priscilla found this…message in a bottle at Lake Belton!” Well, kudos to Priscilla! Now, it’s up to all of us to help her find Dora Taylor!

Kleenex Message in a Bottle Nearly Trashed

That’s right: I found a Kleenex message in a bottle. And I almost threw it away…

In addition to messages, I find lots of bizarre stuff in washed-up bottles. Toothbrushes? Check. A zillion cigarette butts? Check. Human hair? Check. So when I find something that looks like a napkin in a bottle, it’s not all that shocking. I usually open it up just to make sure it’s not a message in a bottle. When it turns out to be trash, I cart it off and recycle it.

But there was something about this one bottle I found a while back. As you can see, the paper inside looks a little unusual. It is not the normal rolled-up scroll of printer paper or stationery. In fact, it just looks like a napkin or paper towel or Kleenex tissue.

And yet… It’s not exactly wadded up, is it?

A Surprising Find on a Nova Scotia Beach

11-year-old Dallas Goreham of Woods Harbour, Nova Scotia was at the beach with his father and grandmother, looking for sea glass, when he found something quite different–a plastic bottle containing letter nearly twice as old as himself. As with any good message-in-a-bottle story, there was a bit of mystery in the bottle, too. The 18 year old message in a bottle was signed by Rita who included a non-functional email address. But who was Rita? And where was she?
