2022 Delivered Amazing Examples of Messages in Bottles

Every year brings fascinating new message in a bottle stories… But 2022 was in a league of its own, with one mind-boggling message in a bottle story after another! 2022 was like the “Summer of Love” but for bottled messages. It’s hard to imagine another year ever containing the sheer multitude of powerful message in a bottle stories that this year gave us, though 2016 wasn’t too shabby.

He found a waterproof digital camera washed ashore in the Caribbean in 2013, but we didn’t get around to “solving” it until 2022, thanks to the help of readers. Message in a Bottle in Utah Lake

Folks, I live in Salt Lake City, and that’s very close to a lake called Utah Lake. It is a big lake, and I have always wondered whether anyone has ever sent a message in a bottle in Utah Lake? After all, messages in bottles can float around in landlocked lakes for ages before someone finds them! Like this message in a bottle from Belton Lake in Texas, which is probably 14 – 25 years old, and this 42 year old message in a bottle found in Lake Marion, South Carolina, and this one that floated in Grand Lake, OK for 23 years before being found.

Well, my question has been answered! A duck hunter named Travis has found a message in a bottle in Utah Lake that was written by two kids, Armani and Kayden. They did not give contact information or even date the letter, according to FOX 13 News In fact, we’re not even sure that they sent the message in a bottle IN Utah Lake. Instead, they may have sent it in one of the rivers that feeds Utah Lake.

Uplifting Message in a Bottle’s Author Has Been Found

When Laura Barnard of New South Wales, Australia, found a message in a bottle at Entrance Beach in early November, she posted about it on Facebook in hopes of finding the uplifting message in a bottle’s author — a 5-year-old boy named Flynn. Within a day, her post had been shared more than 600 times. That number quickly grew to over a thousand shares. Australia’s 7 News did a story about Laura’s find (though it should be noted that the video in that story is, confusingly, about a totally different message in a bottle), and I joined in the hunt with my previous post. Well, as if to prove the point that messages in bottles bring people together, thousands of strangers helped to spread the word about Laura’s find–and now, Flynn has been found!

Kleenex Message in a Bottle Nearly Trashed

That’s right: I found a Kleenex message in a bottle. And I almost threw it away…

In addition to messages, I find lots of bizarre stuff in washed-up bottles. Toothbrushes? Check. A zillion cigarette butts? Check. Human hair? Check. So when I find something that looks like a napkin in a bottle, it’s not all that shocking. I usually open it up just to make sure it’s not a message in a bottle. When it turns out to be trash, I cart it off and recycle it.

But there was something about this one bottle I found a while back. As you can see, the paper inside looks a little unusual. It is not the normal rolled-up scroll of printer paper or stationery. In fact, it just looks like a napkin or paper towel or Kleenex tissue.

And yet… It’s not exactly wadded up, is it?

Mardi Gras Message in a Bottle Found

A couple years ago, I saw this story floating around the web for a bit, and I was intrigued. But I never heard any resolution–so here we are. The basic story is that an imgur user named “moskeytoes” found a message in a bottle in 2016 that had been sent by three people: Amanda Ferguson, someone named “Jinks” and someone named “Fern,” I think… They sent it in celebration of Mardi Gras in 2004. On moskeytoes’ imgur feed, there are a bazillion trolly messages that mean nothing to me, from people claiming to be Amanda, or to have known Amanda, yadda yadda. It is impossible to tell whether moskeytoes ever really found Amanda (and hey, moskeytoes, if you see this–hit me up! I’d love to help you solve this thang!). But this Mardi Gras message in a bottle is so intriguing to me–I just had to go digging for the back story…
