One crazy day in 2008, I found two messages in bottles on an uninhabited Caribbean island.

I’ve already told the story of the message on the right, which was from a woman named Janet.

But the one on the left is a different story…

I found it jammed under a rock ledge on a section of rocky coast.  This is how rocky the coast was. Like my high socks?

Recently, Richard Kaplan posted a comment in which he said, “I always include the date and place I send bottles from.”  I responded, saying, “the business card I found didn’t have a date or place!”

Turns out, I was WRONG!

I was drifting off to sleep the other night, and Richard’s claim was on my mind.  So, I got up and scrutinized his message in a bottle once more.  I don’t know how I missed it before, but through the wavy green glass, I could see impressions left by a pen on the back of Richard’s card.

Well, I found Janet and Bruce LaClair’s message in a bottle in February 2008. They had sent it from the bridge in New Hope, Pennsylvania, in 1981.

"April 4, 1981. Launched from the Delaware River, New Hope, Pennsylvania. To Whomever is the finder and keeper of this bottle. This is the date of our wedding and the start of our life together. We are leaving Pennsylvania on April 6th, 1981 to go on our honeymoon at Key Largo, Florida until April 12 of the same year. We hope to find this bottle while there and figure out the traveling time of which the botle took (if it is a good time, the next time we come down there we will build a raft and just float down). If found, please respond with place found and date. Thank you. Mr. & Mrs. Bruce La Clair, P.O. Box 131, Pipersville, PA"

But how would I find them? The message was older than I was! Continue reading →

How I Found a Message in a Bottle Older Than Me – By Stepping on It!

One day in February of 2008, I stepped on this message in a bottle:

That’s how I found it—no kidding: I stepped on it.  I was walking on dunes covered in vines and succulent tropical plants, and suddenly my foot slipped off something roundish.  When I pulled back the vines, there was this bottle, glinting sunlight back at me.

How a Business Card in a Bottle Led Me to New York City

After meeting Ed and Carol Meyers in Washington, D.C., I was back on the train, heading to New York City to meet Richard Kaplan. I was determined to get my money’s worth from my Amtrak Rail Pass! And, I needed to meet the man on the other end of this business card in a bottle I found two years earlier.

Richard Kaplan's business card in a bottle.
